Learning support

At Coleg Gwent you’ll receive an outstanding level of learning support to make sure you achieve your full potential on your course.

We offer a wide range of support available for learners that require help with their studies, including:

  • Study skills

  • Numeracy

  • Literacy

  • CV building

  • Exam preparation

  • Planning and organising coursework

 

Help with literacy and numeracySkills coaches provide dedicated sessions to help learners with their literacy, language and numeracy skills. You will have an initial assessment and this will decide how much and what type of support you will have.  Find out more about how we will help you with your literacy and numeracy.

 

Personal tutors You’ll have a personal tutor who will support you with the change from school to college.  You’ll meet regularly to discuss progress on your course, personal development and career development, and set milestones to help you achieve your goals.

Your personal tutor will help you by:

- Inducting you into your programme of study

- Setting, monitoring and reviewing your progress through regular one-to-one and group tutorials

- Ensuring you achieve SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely), challenging academic and personal targets through ACE, your electronic Individual Learning Plan

- Ensuring you access appropriate and specialist support where necessary

- Developing a career plan that stimulates ambition into your chosen career and progression route

- Developing wider skills through a programme of challenges and cross-College enrichment activities

 

Support for looked after children, care leavers and young carers We’ve got the Buttle Quality Mark so if you’re currently or have been in care, or you are a carer yourself, we’ve got designated contacts to ensure you can access advice, guidance, support and advocacy.

 

Support for learners with an additional learning need (ALN)   

Our highly qualified staff have the specialist skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality, personalised support programmes for those that need it.

Support is available in the following areas:

    •Visual impairment

    •Hearing impairment

    •Specific learning difficulties

    •General or moderate learning difficulties

    •Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

Support can be delivered by:

    •Additional support assistants (ASAs) who provide support both in-class and out-of-class for a group or an individual

    •SpLD specialist who can create a planned, structured dyslexia programme. The support is 1:1 support delivered outside normal timetabled hours.

    •BSL Communicators who can support hearing impaired learners who use British Sign Language (BSL)

Our staff work collaboratively with cross-college teams in efficiently assessing individual needs as well as organising and implementing a wide range of support programmes, each tailored to the learner.

Exam concessions

Learners with additional learning needs/disabilities may be entitled to support during examinations. This could be in the form of a reader, extra time or other. Please tell your Personal Tutor if you have been awarded exam access arrangements previously.

Assistive technologies

We provide equipment, software and other technologies to help those with additional learning needs overcome their difficulties and be more independent in their learning.
